Panasonic HC-V10K HD 70x Optical Zoom SD Camcorder (Black) (Electronics) With a 32GB class-10 SDcard, the price of this was about US$150. That saves it from being just a 2-star product because the 2012 Panasonic HC-V10K lacks a lot of features on similar entry-level models.
The positives of the basic HC-V10K are that it is great for outdoor photography. Its lens is F1.9~5.7, which really compliments the huge 70x optical zoom; it even has a built in lens-cap. The Power O.I.S. and enhanced stability gives even inexperienced people a clear shot. With alternate camera settings (such as sports, candle-light, or night-view), amateurs can get a finer image. The HC-V10K is also amazingly light -- a few ounces -- and can charge via USB.
However the cons really hurt this entry-level camcorder. Unlike the SONY models that have recording-pause, each time you hit the record button (or switch modes), you create a new movie file. There is no built-in memory, requiring an SDcard purchase. Unlike other models, the battery is only seen when the unit is on; and the meter location is quite small and hard to see. Having a 2.7# screen doesn't help. The exceptionally small screen has even tinier keypad keys (no touch-screen). Worse yet, the delete and power buttons are embedded into the inner-body of the machine instead of the outside or by the screen.
The HC-V10K shoots in 720p, 16:9 format, but the quality of the images are low because there is no dedicated decoder. The bulk of the design is to provide a huge lens to what is essentially a 1.5 MP webcam or cell-cam. If you're going to put this onto a TV screen, use HDMI cables (or the USB link) instead of the composite provided by Panasonic.
Bottom line -- The HC-V10K is the lowest-end camcorder; for the cheapest price you are getting the worst video quality and some ease-of-use issues with its cramped design. But the bare-bones model makes it ultra-light and portable, gives it a good battery rating, and it really does provide superior zoom.
