The Kindle - E-Book Reader Wireless Reading Device

If you are attempting to choose from the space along with a kindle, possibly I will assist. We purchased a space, the kindle Two, along with a kindle DX come july 1st, simply times prior to the kindle Three had been introduced. Following utilizing all of them intensively for some days, all of us came back all of them as well as pre-ordered two kindle 3's, which we have been enjoying for two months now. We've each read a lot of books and newspaper/magazine articles on our kindle 3's and are very happy with them.

First, reasons why we prefer the kindle over nook:

* Page refresh speed

Kindle 2 was twice as fast as nook, Kindle 3 is slightly faster yet. However, I read a whole book on the nook and didn't find page refresh to be so slow as to be annoying. You get used to it, and automatically develop the habit of pressing the page turn button a second before you need it.

* Navigation speed

Here is where the kindle has a huge advantage. Moving the cursor around the screen (e.g. to select things) is way, way, way better on kindle than nook. When you use the rocker button (on kindle 3, or the joystick on kindle 2), the cursor moves almost immediately. In contrast, when you use the "virtual rocker button" on nook's color touch screen, there's a noticeable lag before the cursor moves.
Plus, just to get to the cursor control on the nook, you have to turn on its color touch screen (which is normally off when not in use, to save battery power). This adds to the lag time. [UPDATE: Nook
will soon get a software update that supposedly speeds up performance, specifically navigation as well as web page becomes. If the had been the hardware issue, the reason why was not this set quite a long time back? Absolutely no software program revision may make amends for a sluggish processor chip.]

- Display comparison

You have observed Amazon's statements how the Kindle Three e-ink offers 50% much better comparison. I will tell a person, this is important, specifically in reduced gentle problems, if you have in order to stress just a little to create the not really very because darkish figures upon Kindle Two as well as Space. Whenever lights are not really perfect, it is easier and much more enjoyable to see upon Kindle Three as well as Kindle DX than you are on Space or even Kindle Two.

- Battery

The actual nook's colour Liquid crystal display touch screen drains its battery quickly - I could never get more than 5 days out of a charge. We got at least 7 days or more on the Kindle 2, and the Kindle 3 uses a battery with more capacity than Kindle 2's battery. My wife and I each get at least 3 weeks of battery life between charges (we keep wireless off about half the time).

* Weight

Nook weighs about 3 ounces more than the new Kindle, and you can really feel the difference. Without a case, Nook is still light enough to hold in one hand for long reading sessions without fatigue.
But in a case, Nook is a heavy sucker and wears you out after a while. I discovered personally getting Space from it's situation after i had been reading through Woman That Started the actual Wasps Home. The brand new Kindle Three is really gentle, even just in an instance, we think it is comfy keeping in a single hands with regard to lengthy reading through periods.

Factors many people may like the space:

- In-store encounter

If you want assist with your own space, you are able to go in order to any kind of barnes as well as respectable and obtain a genuine individual to assist. You are able to consider your own space to the cafe portion of the local B&N shop and browse any kind of guide with regard to
free of charge for approximately 1 hour daily. Whenever you consider your own space in order to B&N, a few in-store unique offers and also the periodic free of charge guide appear in your display.

- User-replaceable electric battery

Following a couple of years associated with reasonable make use of, battery will quickly shed being able to maintain electric power charge. Nook's battery is user-replaceable and relatively inexpensive. To replace Kindle's battery, you must ship your
Kindle to Amazon. Amazon's customer service told me that they ship you back a DIFFERENT kindle (though the same model as yours) with a new battery inside. I really don't like this, at all.

* ePub and loaning e-books

Nook uses the ePub format, a widely used open format. Amazon uses a proprietary ebook format. Many libraries will "lend" ebooks in the ePub format, which works with nook but not kindle. Nook owners can "loan" ebooks they purchased to other nook owners for up to two weeks. You can't do this with kindle.

[UPDATE: Kindle will soon get the same lending feature that Nook has.]

* Nook's color LCD touchscreen

This could be a pro or con, depending on your preferences. It makes nook hipper and less drab than kindle. Some people enjoy using the color LCD to view their library or even get around. Used to do, in the beginning. However following fourteen days useful, as well as evaluations along with my personal wife's kindle, I discovered the actual devoted control keys from the kindle simpler as well as much faster to make use of compared to nook's colour touch screen. I additionally discovered the actual vibrant gentle
in the colour display annoying after i had been attempting to study a magazine or even paper (although you should definitely being used, this powers away following a moment approximately to save electric battery).

Additional information:

- Music player

I have tried on the extender about the Kindle Three, and contains much less functions than the usual first-generation ipod device shuffle: not a way to pick a particular monitor to know, not to mention begin to see the title from the presently actively playing monitor.

- Internet browser

The actual internet browser upon Kindle Three is simpler to make use of compared to Nook's internet browser, particularly if moving. However nor is actually excellent, many people will most likely make use of their own e-reader's internet browser just inside a touch.

- PDF support

Viewing PDFs is better on Kindle 3 than on Kindle 2 or nook, but still not that great. You have to zoom in on part of the page and pan around to read the page, which is slightly cumbersome; this is less
an issue on Kindle DX, because of the DX's much bigger display. Graphics in my PDF documents don't usually display correctly on Kindle, and sometimes Kindle can't even open the PDF file if it has
certain kinds of graphics. I imagine the only worthwhile use of Kindle's PDF compatibility would be if you're trying to read an e-book that comes in PDF format, provided it was pre-formatted for reading
on a device with a 6" display. Of course, you can convert many PDF documents to Kindle's native format (you do this by attaching the PDF document to an email that you send to a certain address).

SUMMARY:

Nook and Kindle each offer their own advantages. We like the nook's user-replaceable battery, compatibility with ePub format, and in-store experience. But we strongly prefer Kindle 3 because its
performance is far zippier, it's screen is easier to read, and its smaller and lighter so it's more portable and more comfortable to hold in one hand for long reading sessions.

UPDATE 10/17/2010:

*******************************************************************

There are 200+ comments here, and many commenters have posted extremely helpful replies. There are a few questions that keep getting asked over and over, which I'll address here

So that you don't have to wade through all the comments, I'll summarize what I see as the key points from the discussion. Keep in mind that much of the great info that follows comes from other

Amazon customers who took the time to contribute.

1) Kindle's battery

a) Thanks to commenters for pointing out that 3rd party internet retailers will sell you a replacement battery and include instructions on how to change it yourself. (Some post a video showing how to
do it.) This is not only much cheaper than Amazon's option, you also keep your own Kindle. Opening the Kindle will void the warranty, but it's not likely the battery will die before the warranty expires -
and if it does, Amazon replaces it at no cost to you.

b) Other commenters obtained objective information about the life of the battery that comes in the Kindle 3, and after doing some math, calculated that the original battery in the Kindle will live for 3-6
years. I'll probably upgrade to a newer model before the battery in my Kindle 3 dies, so I'm no longer concerned about this issue.

c) My wife and I get a LOT of battery life out of our kindles between charges. She uses hers an hour a day, I use mine about 2 hours a week. We each keep the wireless off about 2/3 of the time, and
we both get three or more weeks before we have to recharge.

2) 3G vs. wifi

3G and wifi are two ways for the kindle to connect to the internet. You don't need an internet connection to read ebooks and newspapers that are already on your device. You need a connection to

download new content to your kindle, and also to use kindle's browser to surf the internet. Let's suppose for the moment that you don't use Kindle's browser very often.

If you don't have wifi at home, you should probably get the 3G model, otherwise you'll have to take your kindle to a wifi hotspot every time you want to download a magazine or even paper.

If you have wi-fi compatability in your own home, you are able to most likely endure with no 3rd generation edition. How about when you are abroad? Should you study e-books on a trip, simply stock up your own kindle with some e-books prior to staying away. It is really an concern should you sign up for a regular regular in your Kindle, such as the Ny Occasions; after that, it is useful to possess 3rd generation so you still get a brand new problems each and every day time. However, wi-fi compatability 'hang-outs' tend to be appearing almost everywhere -- most of them free of charge -- therefore 3rd generation online connectivity is actually much less essential for a lot of people. As well as, 3rd generation protection isn't common -- I've 2 models associated with family members We observe frequently that reside in places that 3rd generation protection is actually spotty; however in each of individuals cities, the actual resorts We remain in possess free of charge wi-fi compatability, therefore I am protected.

If you are using Kindle's internet browser often, it might be useful to find the 3rd generation design. I do not enjoy Kindle's internet browser, as well as my personal telephone includes a great internet browser as well as show, therefore there is nearly in no way an excuse for me personally to make use of Kindle's internet browser.

The majority of this particular proposes so you can get the actual less expensive wi-fi compatability edition. However you will find good reasons to think about the 3rd generation edition. Very first, the additional cash you have to pay for that 3rd generation edition purchases a person limitless life time free of charge 3rd generation support; considering this by doing this, the cost doesn't really appear uncommon. 2nd, the greater you are abroad, the much more likely you will find your self in times by which wi-fi compatability is not obtainable however 3rd generation protection is nice; most likely not All too often, however every now and then. After that, it is good to possess 3rd generation, particularly if you obtain a every day regular or even if you wish to obtain a brand new e-book.

Three) Amazon's amazing structure, ePub, Calibre

It is accurate, having a space, you are able to "borrow" e-books from the collection, in the event that individuals e-books have been in the actual ePub structure. A few commenters possess stated this particular is effective on the space; additional commenters possess stated the actual choice of e-books from a few your local library is actually frustratingly little. Regardless of whether you've got a Space or perhaps a Kindle, read the free of charge Calibre software program. Calibre works together with Kindle, Space, and many main ereader manufacturers.
This enables you to transform e-books in one structure to a different (as long as the actual e-book document isn't copy-protected). You are able to transform ePub documents right into a structure that actually works nicely using the Kindle. Calibre is extremely trustworthy as well as dependable. I'm beginning to utilize it, and delay pills work nicely personally. We no more really feel associated with Amazon's amazing structure. Although, honestly, I love buying Amazon's shop through my personal kindle and purchasing
Amazon . com kindle publications. I'll most likely still obtain the great majority associated with my personal content material through Amazon . com, therefore the proven fact that the actual kindle runs on the amazing Amazon . com structure isn't actually an issue personally.

Four) Pdf file documents

Space doesn't have indigenous Pdf file assistance. Whenever you place the Pdf file document in your space, space changes this in to a good ebook-like document, you'll be able to change the actual typeface dimension and also the textual content as well as pagination may change the same as
along with any kind of e-book. However , you can't begin to see the unique Pdf file document within the structure it had been produced.

Kindle Three as well as Kindle DX possess indigenous assistance with regard to Pdf file documents. You can observe Pdf file documents just like they'd show up on your pc. You may also transform Pdf file documents for an ebook-like structure, after which Kindle deals with all of them only the method the actual Space deals with all of them -- textual content as well as pagination change whenever you alter the typeface dimension.

Regrettably, a few icons, equations, as well as images go missing or even mangled within the interpretation -- even if viewing PDF files in their native format on the Kindle.

Moreover, the small screen size of the Kindle 3 is not great for PDF files, most of which are designed for a larger page size. You can zoom and pan, but this is cumbersome and tiresome. Thanks to
commenters who suggested viewing PDF files in landscape mode; this way, you can see the entire top half of the page without panning, and then scroll down to the bottom half. This works a little
better.

UPDATE 11/06/2010:

*******************************************************************

My comments about the Nook apply to the original Nook (which continues to be available), not the new color Nook that was just announced.

To me, the new color Nook is in a different product category than the Kindle or original Nook. The color Nook has an LCD screen, like an iPad or most computer monitors. Reading on a computer

screen for long periods of time is not comfortable for me - it causes fatigue and headaches. The e-ink Kindle is very comfortable for long reading sessions. So I'll take a pass on the color Nook. But it will probably be great for others, especially people who want to watch movies, surf the web and play games on their reader, and don't mind the extra cost, weight, or lack of 3G. I'm looking forward to
reading user reviews when it comes out. If you get one, please post a comment to let us know how you like it.
