Short Bright Flash Augustin Lighthouse

A Short Bright Flash: Augustin Fresnel and the Birth of the Modern Lighthouse (Hardcover) In this compelling book, the author, a professor of history of science, recounts the amazing story of the modern lighthouse. The central figure here is Augustin Fresnel, a French physicist, who devised a special lens that could be used to immensely improve the intensity of lighthouse beams. Although Fresnel died young, the story of his legacy is continued throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth as the author describes the gradual adoption of this lens throughout the world, until the gradual phasing out of lighthouses due to technological advancements such as the Global Positioning System.

I found this book to be very well-written in a style that is clear, lively, authoritative, captivating and quite accessible. Despite the scientific overtones, this is mainly a history book; any technical matters are very clearly described for anyone to easily understand. This book can be enjoyed by anyone, particularly those with an interest in the history of science.
