Apple iPod classic Black Generation

Apple iPod classic 160 GB Silver (7th Generation) NEWEST MODEL (Electronics) There's no substitute for space and that should be the driving force behind anyone's purchase of the Classic. The iPod Classic remains the best dedicated music player on the market today. With 160GB of space, I can hold my entire library, many songs of which are in Lossless (large files, high quality) format as well as all of my photos, backed up files from my computer, you name it. It's very hard to fill it up for the average person. For someone serious about music and taking it all with you, this is the machine. No Wi-Fi required...no picking which songs you want to sync or not sync. You can literally take your entire CD library that you built over years and years, load it onto your computer in the same quality as a CD essentially, and never have to touch your CD's again.

With the advent of cloud-based computing, people are increasingly not taking their libraries with them. And with that being said, you'd think a device like the iPod Classic might seem obsolete. It's not. It has a clear place in the world of music players and its position in solid as a rock.

As folks have gone on to iPod Touch and (more likely) iPhones, an unspoken casualty has been the quality of the music. The touch models and the phones don't have the capacity and, what capacity there is, is shared with a variety of other functions other than music. They're essentially small tablets, with a lot of other functionality that distracts from being a true music player. The touch interface is not as intuitive as the click-wheel and, all in all, they're not great music players because they lack the space to really hold a quality music library. There's always a compromise with an iPhone or an iPod Touch...unchecking this box and that box to make sure you don't run out of space. It's a cumbersome and painstaking process. Inevitably, you end up not syncing a song that you end up wanting to listen to when you're away from the computer. It's so frustrating! It's a battle for space! And with all of the apps, e-mail, camera, etc. on the Touch and iPhone, you're losing massive amounts of space to other functions of the device that have nothing to do with music. Music takes a back seat to the rest of the stuff and you'll end up deleting this and that to keep it under the capacity.

Since iPod Touch and iPhone came out, we've have taken a huge step back in the quality of audio we carry in our pockets. With the advent of streaming audio and cloud based computing, folks are now used to needing an internet connection to access music. If you can't carry enough music on your iPod Touch or iPhone, just open up Pandora and they'll give you a nice mix with a bunch of ads spliced in...that's okay for some but not me. And while Pandora works in a pinch, the quality of streaming music and most compressed formats of stored music, at their core, are inferior to CD's or Apple Lossless format (equivalent). You can tell the difference. Most folks will settle for some degradation in quality, but true aficionados playing through quality sound systems with an ear for quality will appreciate the space this device offers. In a nutshell, you can't store a large music library in excellent quality on the current lineup of iPhone and iPod Touch models.

Enter the iPod Classic 160GB. With this amount of space, you can take the entire library with you and you can store in truly high quality. With no Wi-Fi capability, unlike the iPod Touch or iPhone models, you'll never have to worry about a notification popping in and beeping in the middle of songs playing. If you are playing music at a party, there's nothing more annoying than a "new message" notification beeping in right in the middle of that awesome song. That will never happen with the Classic, guaranteed. There are no apps, e-mail, camera, or other functions hogging space you could otherwise use for your music.

If you're a photographer, the Classic's massive space makes storage of every photo a breeze. Sync the device with your computer and you've got it all at your fingertips. Also, like previous Classics, you can use it as a hard drive and take your files with you in lieu of a flash drive...this is in ADDITION to the music you have. So much space in a tiny package.

It's not perfect. I'm not a fan of the split-screen they added recently and wish they'd do something about the things being so prone to scratches. Get a case (I use an Agent 18 Classic Shield) and you'll be fine. If you're serious about music, you should have one of these. The ease of use of iTunes combined with the capacity is unparalleled. They still look good even in 2013 and will for years to come. Get one while you can and start enjoying music again.
