ASUS Multi-Mode Pocket Router (WL-330NUL) (Personal Computers) I travel a lot. I travel to Europe a lot. As anyone knows who has been there, wifi is rarely free, and it's rarely unlimited even when you pay for it. And it costs per device. In addition to that, many ultrabooks these days do not come with an Ethernet jack in them.
This device is quite flexible and can solve both of those issues. It's not perfect, and I'd say the software is the biggest flaw as it's not well polished, and I couldn't get it to work on a Mac. But-- I set it up on a PC and it works perfectly with the Mac now.
If you need an ethernet adapter, it can do that. If you want to plug it into a wall jack and broadcast private secure wireless, it can do that! (with a USB power adapter that you supply, from, say, a phone)
If you need to plug in your laptops AND broadcast to other devices like a phone, tablet, etc. It can do that too! The device is quite flexible and reminds me of a transformer.
The downside is that the software for the PC is pretty dreadful. It looks old and like someone a college kid designed. The upside is that you don't have to use the software once you do the initial software update-- the update provides a way to upgrade the firmware in the future from the web browser configuration page-- like any Linksys or Netgear router.
It feels well constructed. The USB plug does fit in snugly, but the cable that it uses is ribbon/flat, and I have some small concerns about that. We'll see how it goes.
In the months and years past, I used to carry the last generation of Airport Express-- to provide myself wireless at hotels. This is 1/10th the size of that, is finished in anondized aluminum, and honestly, may be the product of the year for travelers. I don't know why a company that focuses on routers didn't come up with this, and I'm sure they'll have their own competitors out soon. Until then, I fully recommend this for the road warrior, as long as you are willing to deal with those couple small caveats.
Feel free to ask me any questions below. I'll do my best to answer, or test & answer.
