Sony HDR-CX260V High Definition Handycam 8.9 MP Camcorder with 30x Optical Zoom and 16 GB Embedded Memory (Black) (2012 Model) (Electronics) First off, I've never had a videocam. I'm not fully electronic-savvy but I'm not totally oblivious to technological gadgets either. I can follow printed instructions well & figure some things out either through common sense or trial-&-error.
That said, I researched quite a bit before purchasing this Sony model, then I home-tried it before taking it on vacation. I wasn't sure how much memory I would need/use, so I bought some extra 32GB sticks to bring along, just in case.
Overall it worked great. Loved the touch-screen, through it wasn't as sensitive as the usual iPod/iPad screens. I just left it at the basic settings and only used the zoom in/out button. Even though it had the capability of taking single photos, I didn't use it. My husband was getting jealous, calling it my new "toy" !!
I put in a 32 GB memory stick and started filming in Bali. Days later in Singapore, I wondered why I hadn't seen a "memory-full" message yet ... Turns out, since I hadn't switched (on the menu screen) to the memory-stick option, I had been using the built-in memory. So of the 9 days of off/on filming, I only switched to the memory-stick on about Day 6, and who knows when I'll finish using up that memory?!
It didn't pick up sound very well unless we spoke loudly or the noises (concert music) were loud. But it wasn't a big deal for us. I liked the feature where it picked up surrounding light to brighten something dark I was aiming at. I also liked that it somehow minimized my shakiness when I played back the video on the screen :)
The velcro-strap was adjustable for different hand-sizes. I learned that my fingers could reach all the controls best when the strap was positioned over the back of the hand, not the knuckles, so that the thumb was on the opposite side. Never had the fear or worry of it falling out of my hand. I had a carrying case for it, but never used it because it was so bulky. I actually could fit this in one of my big pockets when it rained.
It kept its battery-power well. I never did have to use my back-up (charged-up) battery. I charged it every night before going to bed (there is a charging-light that comes on) and it usually is done halfway through the night. I was worried that my turning it off-&-on might use up the battery sooner than estimated, but it didn't seem to be a problem. Maintenance-wise, I only had to wipe the lens when it fogged up in the equatorial humidity & rain, nothing else.
For a basic non-professional user, I think this is a great unit. Probably some people would take greater advantage of its creative features (music accompaniment, etc) than I did, but I had a grand old time with mine.
