Lincoln World Making Statesman American

Lincoln in the World: The Making of a Statesman and the Dawn of American Power (Hardcover) Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What's this?) What a fabulous book!! How many Americans now that the Civil War was actually a global war concern? Or that Lincoln had to deal with European countries concerns be it France Germany England Spain and even Russia who had ships of the east coast of the United States.

The author does a wonderful job challenging the reader to think of the 'what if' questions the civil war and the concern of Europe could have had in changing the course of history.

Should we be surprised that Lincoln had migraines and depression? I think not.

And chapter 4 Lincoln and Marx is really interesting and makes me wonder how many Americans realize that Karl Marx wrote for a NYC paper and that Lincoln read his articles. These two men were contemporaries to say the least.

The time that Lincoln lived in and modern times have many things in common. The telegraph and steam ship meant news reached Europe faster, like Facebook and Twitter are reaching countries and changing the course of history these days.

Mary Lincoln comes off in the book much differently than other books have shown. Fluent in French, well educated, upper class upbringing and very much involved in giving Lincoln advise, which he often took.
