K'NEX Star Shooter Coaster Building Set (Toy) Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What's this?) When finally assembled, my grandson had a lot of fun with this set. However, in my opinion the assembly is more than half the value of the set, so I believe that it should be given to a child who can assemble it, otherwise an adult will have to do it. The set is billed as being for 7+, but I think that this is more than just a stretch for most 7 year olds. I have two grandsons of this age and have given this set and a similar one to each of them. The sheer number of small pieces that had to be assembled almost immediately overwhelmed them, so it was my son-in-laws who had to build the set. The instructions are clear and pictorial, so there is no reading level barrier for the younger child; it is more a question of patience and following instructions for the assembly of over 400 small pieces. It not only requires patience, it also requires some organizational ability to layout all the pieces and follow the instructions in a logical step-by-step manner. In my opinion, to do this a child should be 10+, at least. However, there may be some younger children who do have the patience and organizational ability to do it.

This set teaches a lot to the child who is old enough not to be overwhelmed by the process. It teaches patience, how to follow instructions, and helps improve the child's spatial reasoning. Thus, I think that to get the most out of it, it is most appropriate for a child older than 7+, or for the child of this age who has demonstrated the patience and ability to construct something this complex. Otherwise, an adult will have to assembly it, but the child will still get a lot of enjoyment from it, but not as much learning or satisfaction as would be the case if they built it.

My rating is thus 5-star for entertainment once the set is finally built, and 5-star as a construction project for an older child. However, if you get it for a seven-year-old, you should be prepared to do most of the constructing, which in my opinion, reduces the overall rating to 4-stars.
