Kindle Paperwhite Resolution Display Next Gen

Kindle Paperwhite, 6" High Resolution Display with Next-Gen Built-in Light, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers (Electronics) The new 2013 Kindle Paperwhite model does not feel like an explosion of new changes, though there is enough here to have it feel like a wonderful upgrade. It should be very obvious that Paperwhite upgrade is far less stark than the move from the Kindle Touch to the Kindle Paperwhite. If anything, the thing that most cynical customers may be saying is that the new Paperwhite is what the original Paperwhite should have been.

The Screen

The first generation Kindle Paperwhite was plagued with "issues." The main issue that consumers complained about was that the screen wasn't nearly white enough and in many cases the screen had a pink/green bleed through their screen. This led to a flurry of people who exchanged their Paperwhite six or seven times in a row in order to get the perfect white e-reader. This led to amazon responding by saying that the off color in places is considered a normal occurrence.

There has only been limited use of this item so far but I am here to say that the screen is definitely whiter. It has a brilliant brightness and there is definitely a noticeable increase in resolution. I happen to read many black and white comics on it and this is where I can really see the difference. If you want to geek out this item boasts that it has 212 ppi and 16 level of grey.

The Weight

Once change that usually gets people excited with new products is a change in weight. The original Kindle Paperwhite weighed 7.5 ounces and the new one weighs 7.3 ounces. At a difference of 0.2 ounces you might be crazy to say you can tell a difference but I suppose it is possible. One nice feature is that the case is the same size so your old case should still fit. The measurements are 6.7 x 3.6 x 0.36

The Biggest change

There are a million things you an say about a new iteration of any product. Here, the new bright screen seems to be what might please most people. To me the biggest change here though is the change in the processor. Non tablet style kindles always seem to drag a bit. I happen to use my Kindle with PDF files very often and for some reason these can really confuse the device and cause the pages to hang. I am very please to say that this item happens to move very smoothly. Page changing is incredibly fast when comparing with the older model. Even choosing drop-down menus seemed to hang before by there is definitely a noticeable change here. Amazon boasts that it is actually 25 percent faster and oh boy can you tell the difference. To me this change alone warrants the five star review.

Pros
- Fantastic feeling rubber backing. This is the same as last years model but the logo is different.
- New processor, this is supposed to be 25% faster and the speed is noticeably quicker.
- The screen flashes black less frequently. The task of flashing black allows the Paperwhite to clear the screen like an Etch A Sketch.
- Every word you type in get saved in a series of flashcards in something called "vocab builder"
- You can FINALLY quickly jump from one page to the next easily This means you can finally skim a book and rush forward to see how much you have left in the chapter. This is just a software update and really could be brought to the old Paperwhite.
- You can make the light brighter. I have to say i never had a problem with this before but apparently people really seem to want brighter light.
- The light itself is a but more even. Some people were very annoyed that the bottom of the screen had noticeably uneven areas of lighting.
- item can be synced with audio-book via Audible. Very neat feature that I will hopefully try out over the next few months.
- The screen looks whiter the text looks blacker. I didn't expect this change to be do stark but it really makes the old Paperwhite look drab. In memory this seems like a true white while the other is a white that had a blue sock mixed in with the wash.

Cons

- Does not come with wall charger. buy one for 10 dollars or charge via USB
- While the screen does flash less and turn pages faster it is still slower than a smart device - though i have to say the increase in speed is very nice
- While doing the quick jump "slider app" there did seem to be some occasional stuttering and pausing while trying to quickly dash back and forth.
- There are many updates to this item from last year but many of them are just software updates ( check with a user of last years model to ensure that those features haven't turned up on that one.
- Still no audio functionality. To some this is an unnecessary feature since this is an e-reader at a good price but people do tend to expect every device to have a Swiss Army knife arsenal of features

If you are in the market for an e-reader this is the item you want. If you already have a Paperwhite you probably still want this but you definitely don't need it, but it is a fun upgrade. The most important update here is that the speed is a lot faster and the image is crisper.
