Assassins Creed IV Black Flag Xbox

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Xbox 360 (Video Game) Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What's this?) Assassin's Creed IV... What to say? It's another good Assassin's Creed game. The formula remains the same-- Run around, climb buildings (or trees), synchronize on towers, get contracts, kill people, hide in crowds, etc. If you've played an AC game, you're not going to be surprised by this one. Graphically, it looks great on the 360, and the setting-- this time you're a pirate-- is pleasantly different from previous entries. The sailing and cannon battles are fun, too.

But I can't help feeling like I've been here before, and that the series is resting on its laurels. It's not really doing anything new. The story keeps evolving, yes, and if story is what you're interested in then this is an interesting continuation of the tale begun in the first entry to the series. But the game play seems to be stalled. I guess the other side of this argument could be to say #if it ain't broke, don't fix it#, but honestly, I'm wondering if we're in for a dozen more Assassin's Creed games in which you wander around, climb buildings, synchronize on towers, take contracts, and kill people to advance the story. At times I feel like all the action in-between cinemas is just button-mashing filler. I don't really feel like I have a lot of control. Soldiers show up? Mash buttons until they're dead or run away until they lose you. Target approaches? Mash buttons until he's dead. If it's not meant to be interacted with, then it's just background scenery, and if it is, you press a button and the game auto-interacts with it. The finesse I felt in the first two Assassin's Creed games seems to be lost in the story, now. It's starting to feel hollow and pointless.

Still, it's not a bad game. It's well-made. There are no major glitches. The controls are spot-on. The music and sound effects are excellent. The story is still somewhat entertaining (though getting old), and it's a fun time if you're a fan. It's not as #piratey# as Sid Meier's Pirates! Gold, but there are sufficient pirating moments to be satisfying to pirate fans.

So I give it four stars. I am docking the one star simply because the formula is getting overused and they're not really doing much to reinvigorate game play elements. It's great at doing what the series has always done, but it hasn't taken any chances since Assassin's Creed II, and that's unfortunate. It's almost as if they want to make a movie first, and a game second, and all our running around is just to kill time between cinemas.
